a few weeks ago I got the opportunity to go check out a nuclear missile silo in the area that had been decommissioned and converted into a private residence. The owner’s name is Alex and he’s nothing like what you would expect (considering he owns a nuclear missile silo.) His website is siloboy.com and is totally worth checking out. Below are my pix. I’m not overly into the military history of it all, but I was still really impressed by its gigantic scale! This guy takes the classic geek’s desire for big toys to a whole new level! blast doors open, one ram almost installed.
this is one of the 2 rams that open and close the blast doors.

not much to look at on the surface
this is 2 of 8 giant springs that support the 8 story steel structure
one of four brackets that hold the whole shebang onto the wall. real big
floor/tripod shot from the lowest accessable level (7?)
no tripod? – use the floor! 6th level down
from the bottom looking up
artsy shot of the spiral stairwell
shot showing how torn up it is in there. rust and detritus everywhere
the military must have spent a week before deciding this is the best ladder to use here.
closeup of the giant spring. Sorry it’s blurry. Stupid beating heart
looking ~100 ft down into the murky abyss
view looking down the silo

WOW is all I have to say…
I can feel that it was a very pleasant experience for you with Alex. I wish I could be there. Nuclear projects attracts me very much.
